Best Dates to Retire in 2026 and 2027

It depends on your sector: federal (FERS) dates from DOI and FNN, the teachers' June wave, and the private-sector rules — all in ready tables, plus a countdown.

There is no single best date — there's a best date for your sector. Here are the rules and the tables.

The three universal rules

1. End of the month. Pensions and annuities start on the first of the following month — almost everywhere.
2. End of the pay period. Complete the period, keep the full accrual — private and public sector alike.
3. End of the year. Bonuses, leave payouts and matches often vest or pay at year end.

Federal (FERS)

2026 (per DOI/IBC, ibc.doi.gov, January 2026): May 30 · June 27 · October 31 · November 28 · December 31
2027 (per Federal News Network, federalnewsnetwork.com, September 2026): January 9 · April 30 · May 29 · October 30 · December 31

Teachers

The June wave is real — Georgia TRS documents the "large volume of retirements at the end of each school year" (trsga.com; June 15 rule per trs.texas.gov). Deadlines (GA TRS): June 1 retirement → apply by March 31 · July 1 → April 30 · August 1 → May 31. Texas adds the June 15 rule: retire effective May 31, work through June 15.

Private sector

Three checks before you pick: (1) finish the pay period, (2) confirm your 401(k) match is vested — many plans vest on year-end or anniversary dates, (3) the last day of the month keeps benefits continuous. Last Friday of a month, late in the year, ticks every box for most people.

Questions people ask

What is the best month to retire?

It depends on your sector: federal employees do best at the end of the year (lump sum + January annuity), teachers at the end of a school year (June), and private-sector employees at the end of a pay period and month — often the last Friday of December.

What are the best FERS retirement dates in 2027?

Per Federal News Network: January 9, April 30, May 29, October 30 and December 31 — pay-period ends aligned with month boundaries.

Why do teachers retire in June or July?

Because contracts end with the school year. Georgia TRS alone sees a 'large volume of retirements at the end of each school year' — and Texas teachers can retire effective May 31 while working through June 15.

Is retiring at the end of the year really better?

For federal employees, usually yes: about 40% of federal retirements happen in the year-end window, combining the holiday period, the annual-leave lump sum and a clean January annuity start.

What's the best day of the week to retire?

Friday — it caps the week, closes a pay period cleanly, and turns your first Monday into the first day of the rest of your life.
