Teacher Retirement Countdown — Count the Days You'll Actually Teach
A countdown built for teachers: days, work days, and in-class days — summer and school holidays excluded. Set your last in-class day and see the real number.
Teachers don't retire on December 31 — they retire on the last day of a school year. This countdown is built for that reality.

Why teachers count differently
A 10-month contract means your "work year" ends in May or June, not with the calendar. And the number that matters isn't calendar days — it's in-class days: the days you'll actually stand in front of a class, with summer break and school holidays excluded. The counter above gives you calendar days, work days (the weekday skeleton) and paychecks left — set the target to your last in-class day for the honest number.
The documented June wave
Teacher retirements cluster at the end of the school year — Georgia's TRS says it plainly: the system sees a "large volume of retirements at the end of each school year" (trsga.com). If you're part of the wave, the application deadlines are just as documented:
| Effective retirement | Application deadline (GA TRS) |
|---|---|
| June 1 | March 31 |
| July 1 | April 30 |
| August 1 | May 31 |
The Texas June 15 rule
Under TRS Texas, you can retire effective May 31 while working through June 15 to complete the school year — the best-known carve-out in teaching (trs.texas.gov). Texas teachers finishing the year use it to avoid losing a month of annuity.
State systems differ — check yours
Teacher retirement runs on state systems (TRS and cousins), each with its own eligibility ages and formulas — and some teachers fall outside Social Security coverage entirely. We state official rules and count days; we don't give financial advice. Your state TRS and ssa.gov are the sources that bind.
The 100-day chalkboard
When the counter hits 100 days left, teachers tell us it hits differently — the last stretch of a career measured in whiteboard markers. We have a whole page for that milestone.
Questions people ask
When do most teachers retire?
At the end of a school year. Georgia's TRS states it sees a 'large volume of retirements at the end of each school year' — the June wave is the single biggest cluster in the teaching profession.
What is the June 15 rule in Texas?
Under the Texas TRS, a teacher can retire effective May 31 while still working through June 15 to finish out the school year — a carve-out so ending the year doesn't cost you a month of annuity.
What are in-class days?
The days you actually teach: weekdays minus summer break, holidays and school closures. Our work-days counter gives the weekday skeleton — set your target as the last in-class day to get the number that matters.
Is a teacher's retirement age the same as Social Security's?
Not necessarily. Teacher retirement runs on state systems (like TRS), which set their own eligibility rules — and some teachers fall outside Social Security coverage entirely. Check your state system and ssa.gov for your situation.
When should I file my retirement application?
Roughly 6 months ahead is the common guidance, and summer retirements have hard deadlines: Georgia TRS requires application by March 31 for a June 1 retirement, April 30 for July 1, and May 31 for August 1.
